PRESENCE - Cast glass grape leaves - stainless spring steel wire
Presence begins with the simplest of intentions, and achieves remarkable sensitivity and impact.
The work is comprised of separate leaves that have been direct cast by press moulding so as to achieve individual character and shape. This is amplified in the detail of the front surface of each leaf where the rib and vein structure is in evidence. Yet the liquid qualities of glass are also visible both at the edge and in the organic underside.
‘There is a perceived randomness and musicality of display and Merryn uses the arrangement to deliberately draw the eye to nature’s own beautiful song or harmony. Her innovative use of stainless steel wire to lift the leaves off the wall liberates the leaves from mere description to that of pendulous poems. The shadows created – elicited, blended and blurred – multiply and vary in tone remarkably from the translucency of watercolour to spot light intensity of colour.
